Natural Sciences; have they changed us?

Natural sciences on their own do not give many answers when questioning the reasoning for ones existence, but the do help to explain our position in the vast universe that seems to stretch out into infinity. personally, it helped me to understand how meaningless our actions are when it comes to the universe, no matter what we do on this planet, the only ones it is going to affect is us and the species living on it. Also, my perception of time has changed drastically since the discovery of the universes age. My lifetime will be nothing compared to that, even though it will feel like an eternity to me. The universe has existed much before me or even the human race did, and will continue to do so after I die. This realisation continuously motivates me to do the most I can the small time that I will be here on earth.   Technology has affected the form and content of my personal knowledge as now we no longer need to know to to skin animals, or what parts of the animals are edib...

Head Transplants

The Issue at hand is whether scientist should continue research with complete head transplants or not. the edd goal of this research would be to operate a human with a full head transplant, where his head would be attached to a new body and the person would be able to regain all control of said body again. If this were to be researched properly and executed successfully, it could allow for the standardisation of such procedures as is the case with organ transplants. Many with body disabilities or survivors of accidents would be able to live their lives as if nothing had happened. this would be a great step to further improve human health as a whole. This is something that everyone in the general public supports as such an advance would only be beneficial to the global community, bringing with it new insight into how our brain and body works with it. The Major ethical implication that this research carries along research is what if it goes wrong. the few full head transplants that ha...

Swearing Illegal?

In 2011, a High Court judge ruled that “people should not be punished for hurling obscenities in public because such words are now so common they no longer cause distress.” This makes the assumption that profanity is now mainstream and therefore is in no need of punishment, ethically speaking, is this decision the right one?   Lets start with the divine command theory, this would state that unlike the judges decision, swearing should be punished, as god would not want profanity to make it into our everyday language. The only real way to stop such actions would be to punish them. This of course has the implication that the majority of the adult population of most nations would have to be punished as swearing has in fact made into everyday vocabulary. On the other hand, this would reduce the use of the obscene words in unnecessary situations such as basic descriptions of anything that moves.   Utilitarianism in this situation has no real preference, as many would benefit f...

RLS: To Kill a Mockingbird

The N-word has a lot of emotion attached to it, as many people do not feel comfortable saying it while others do not feel comfortable reading or hearing it. It is true that the word is no longer used as often as it was in the bast, but the racial discrimination that was present when the word was in use has given it a bad reputation, therefore socially forbidding those who are not racially black to say it. To kill a mockingbird has many of the white characters saying the word in normal conversation as back then , there were no sisal rules set about how a black person should be labeled. Emotion plays a big role in the removal of this book from the public school district in Biloxi, as many of the students, parents and teachers did not feel comfortable reading a book that openly says the N-word when referring to black people, as it is now socially illegal to say that word out loud. But is this decision reasonable? The book was written 57 years ago, in a time where said social constructs ...

Artworthy clothes?

Fashion has been part of a nation or religions culture for as long as we can remember, but modern fashion designers take their clothing choices to new and extreme lengths, all the while calling their creations Art. There is a reason as to why fashion designers go crazier each year when it comes the the "clothes" that they put on their models, with that being the fact that the fashion show has to be entertaining. Any highly respected fashion show has a very limited spectator number and is usually very hard to get into, so for those lucky ones that do manage to get in, they expect a show, something that they will remember. This makes the fashion designers go all out and equip their models with clothing that would never be seen again outside of the fashion show walls. While this all might be entertaining, can his extravagant collection of clothes be called art? Knowledge questions: 1) To what extent can clothes be considered art? 2) How much authority should be given...

RLS: 13 Reasons Why

13 Reasons Why, released in early 2017 as a Netflix original series tells the story of young hanna bakers successful suicide and all of her reasoning as to why. This is a very sensitive topic that has sparked a lot of controversy all ver the world. The TV series was able to raise the number of google search queries relating to suicide by 20%, the way that it dove into a topic that most avoid prompted many to investigate on their own. This is a big worry for many parents as many adolescents that watched the show do not have fully developed minds and do not have a fully developed understanding of the world that they live in or what their actions can do to others. These children might not understand the full meaning of suicide and might think of it as a natural way out if the world seems to hard. Many stated that the addition of a suicide hotline at the end of the series would minimize the effect of the trauma enticing scenes, showing many that suicide should be considered in hard t...

A New way to look at Emotions

The article "A New way to look at emotions - and how to master yours" talks of how ones emotions can be very dependent on the feedback that their body is giving them even though their thoughts might be giving the opposite signals. It also gives a few example of how one can fully master the understanding of their feelings through mindful activities and feeling new things; pushing themselves to do new things. I want to focus on the first part of the article on Emotion identification. The example given in the text talks of a woman that felt as if she was starting to fall for someone through the fact that her body was having all of the reactions that she expected it to have when she came across someone that she liked, the truth was that she didn't feel anything for him at all, but rather that she was becoming ill and her body was reacting accordingly. When i first read this i was a little confused as i thought that all feeling comes from the mind, how we interpret what we ha...
